Scotland

Scotland is a part of the United Kingdom, and the British Isles. The origin of the name Scotland came from the Latin word “Scoti”. The name was given to the Celts that lived in the area. The name Scotland could also be directly translated to “Land of the Scots”.

The first inhabitants in Scotland came after the ice age for 11 000 years ago. The first houses came for 9 500 years ago, while the first villages came for 6000 years ago. In the middle of the 500- century the Irish missionary monk, Columba, started the Christianization of Scotland. Then in the beginning of the 800- century Norwegian Vikings settled on the Shetland Isles, Orkney Islands and the Hebrides.  In the following 100 years England tried to submit Scotland, but their struggles failed. In 1707 Scotland and England joined together in one kingdom, The United Kingdom. They have a united parliament, armed forces and so on.

The Scottish government is responsible for the day-to-day issues that the people have. They take care of the health, education, justice, rural affairs and transport. The government was established in 1999. The purpose of the government is to create a more successful country, with opportunities or all.

Education is very important in Scotland, and the system is some different from the British system. Children start primary school when they are 4,5 or 5,5 years old. When they have been in primary school for seven years they start secondary school.

When you hear the word Scottish your usually thought goes to a man in a skirt playing a bagpipe and talks a strange language. The skirt is called a kilt and is the traditional Scottish clothing, for both men and women. The pattern you find on this kilt is called a tartan.   Bagpipes are very popular in Scotland, together with the famous dish haggis. A haggis will include the heart, liver and lungs of a sheep, onions, oats and spices.  The oldest language in Scotland is Gaelic, but it´s only spoken by around sixty thousand people.

A recent newsstory from Scotland is that the government has recently bought the airport Prestwick. The airport is now a public ownership.

There are many different dialects in Scotland, Scottish Gaelic, English in Scotland and the Scots dialect. Scottish Gaelic is the oldest dialect, and is not similar to English. The English spoken in Scotland is difficult to define, but is the official written language. Scots dialect and the standard English Scottish is very similar and get often blurred. The Scots dialect descends from Old English.

The English Language

English is a very dominate language in the world. One of five speaks English all over the world. Within advertising English expressions and the use of it is very common. This makes the English language more global. It is important that the English is neutral and simple, so it is easy for everyone to understand and communicate through this. To have English as a global language is smart, because it´s a way for everyone to understand each other. English advertisement makes it more global, and common for everyone.

Another reason for English advertisement is that USA is the greatest super power in the world. Many countries look up to them, and want to achieve the same. This is why many countries choose to cooperate with USA and then they have English advertisement.

This commercial is an example of an American product where they have used some English words and expressions. In this example you can see that American products are used all over the world, and is clearly dominant.

The English language

The English language is all around us here in Norway. On a daily basis I use English words like: please, money, snowboard, taxi, take- away, mail, sorry, shopping, okey, facebook, instagram, get a life, brownie and boots.

Some people would say that having many English words in our language is a positive thing. It makes us more global, and can help us become more known to the language. It can also have a negative effect on the Norwegian culture, and make us loose our identity to the Norwegian language.

There can be both positive and negative aspects of having English as a lingua franca. The positive aspect is that the English language is used between many people to communicate within politics, trade, tourism, media and entertainment. The negative aspects of having English as a lingua france is that people can be absorbed by the English language and loose their own lingual identity.

In the book "The Fault In Our Stars" my favorite character is the protagonist, Hazel Grace. Hazel Grace is not a typical cancer kid that slefpites herself. She has no illusion on what´s gonna happened next, she is going to die. What´s so special about Hazel is that she dose not refer her condition with self-pity, but with humor.

I didn't tell him that the diagnosis came three months after I got my first period. Like: Congratulations! You're a woman. Now die. (2.13)

Hazel does not care about whats cool or not, but she knows what she likes. This is what I like about Hazel. She is true to herself. I also love that she can use humor, even though she is diagnosed with cancer, and may never celebrate her next birthday.

The Fault in Our Stars

I have chosen the book The Fault in Our Stars. I choose this book because it seemed very interesting and I have heard many positive reviews about it. It doesn't sound like the typical heartbreaking teenager cancer story. I think it´s a nice mixture of humor, love and courage.
The story is about Hazel Grace. Hazel is your average teenage girl, except for the fact that she has cancer. Once a week she attends Support Group. In Support Group she meets Gus. Gus and Hazel become flirtatious friends and talk about everything together. There relationship is a little complicated, considering there medical statuses. For them the future is one big question mark, but that is what makes the book very exciting.
